What to expect from the initial pelvic therapy evaluation
Pelvic floor physical therapists are specially trained in anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor.
On the initial evaluation with a pelvic floor physical therapist, the patient with sexual dysfunction should expect to undergo a history and assessment of posture, mobility, strength, alignment of the spine and pelvis, identification of external areas of tightness or tenderness.
An internal examination may be performed based on the level of anxiety and comfort of the patient. This internal examination is performed to assess the mobility and integrity of the vulva, vestibule, hymen, and vagina. Individual superficial, intermediate and deep pelvic floor muscles will be assessed for balance, symmetry, strength, endurance, muscle tension and tenderness/pain.
